Kicking off the Fat Fling 2010!

Fat Fling 2010

ITS HERE! ITS HERE! Its time for Fat Fling 2010 to start.

I’m so excited that everyone is here to learn to use their Wii Fit better, and more regularly. This is going to be the best month. Hopefully by the end of it, we’ll have all shed some pounds, made some healthy habits and some great friends.

The official rules and sponsor page is up. Be sure to go check it out. All of the weekly giveaways are open to everyone, but to be eligible for prize drawings at the end of the month there are some specific things you have to do. Everyone is welcome, and you only have to participate as much as you feel comfortable. Even if you just want to stop by and comment a couple times, we don’t mind. The important thing is to GET ON YOUR WII FIT!

How does this work?

Every Monday this month, I’m going to post a weekly Challenge. Then on Friday, there will be a Friday Fat Fling check in post for you to post your progress. Tell us how the weekly challenge went, and how the Fat Fling is going in general. These challenges are not hard, just designed to get you thinking about how to use the Wii Fit efficiently, safely and making the perfect workout that you can fit in your schedule every day.

Tuesdays and Thursdays we will be having reviews and giveaways of awesome Wii and Wii Fit accessories that complement the Wii Fit. Anyone is welcome to enter these giveaways!

At the end of the month, those that have officially participated for the whole month will be eligible to win prizes. All the products we will be giving away this month, we have another to give out to our participants as well. To be eligible for the end of the month prize drawings, you must have followed our official rules. The weekly giveaways are open to everyone.

How do I join?

First off: Get ready to start using your Wii Fit every day, starting today.

Then, grab our ‘I’m Flinging’ badge at the top of our sidebar, and post on your blog that you are joining the Fat Fling 2010. Introduce yourself. Let us know what your goals are for the month. You can post pictures, video, anything you want…or as little as you want. There is no requirement on how much info you share. We just want to know you are doing it, so we can give you some encouragement through the month. After you’ve posted, head back here and add the link to your Fat Fling 2010 post to our linky. Get your post up by May 6th!

Don’t worry if you’ve missed a few days already…JUMP IN! Starting is the important part.

How do I keep track?

If you have a blog, post weekly status updates and let us know how its going. There will be a linkup on the Friday Fat Fling post, so we can all share our progress and see how others are tackling the challenges.

For those of you that don’t have a blog but want to join in, you can create an account at dailyburn.com, and add me and Mika as your friends. There you can track your progress, and post updates without having a blog. **Bloggers: Dailyburn.com is a great place to track your exercise, weight loss, and diet…be sure to check it out too!

What can I win?

We have some awesome sponsors for this first Fat Fling! We’ve got some Wii Fit accessories from Company X Accessories and CTA Digital. Whimsical Walney has given is some neat workout towels from their Words to Sweat By line. If you want to make your balance board and Wii pretty, GH Skinz and DecalGirl can help you there. You might even be able to snag a copy of the first Yoga game for Wii from DreamCatcher Games. So many prizes!

Are you ready to Fat Fling?

This week is our intro week. This week is when we get ourselves set up to work with our Wii Fit all month long. Though you CAN just jump on your Wii Fit and pick exercises randomly, that’s not very efficient. It can also leave you without having done a good workout. This week is ‘Set Up a Routine’ week. This is the week to create a 15-30 minute Wii Fit workout with yoga and strength training. This is how you can quickly get on and off the Wii Fit, while still getting a great workout. Monday’s post will go into it more.

Over the weekend, start thinking about what exercises from those categories you like, and what ones challenge you. Creating a good mix of both of those maximizes your workout.

This is going to be the greatest month. I’m so looking forward to Fat Fling 2010. Join us and make Wii Fit a habit.

What is the Fat Fling 2010?:

Mika and I are going to our first blogging conference during the first week of June. We are both carrying more weight than we need to. In an effort to shoehorn some exercise into our already jam packed days…we have both gotten the Wii Fit. But now we need to make time to use them. I always hear ‘it takes 28 days to make a habit’, so Stuff to Love is going to put that to the test. In May Mika and I–plus all you Fat Fling 2010 participants–are going to get on our Wii Fit every day. Even if its only for 5 minutes. We’re going to take the month of May to make Wii Fit a habit…hopefully losing 5 pounds or more in the process!

How to participate:

To be eligible for the random prize drawings at the end of the month, there are some participation guidelines you must follow. You need a blog, OR an account with DailyBurn.com. If you don’t have those, don’t worry, you can still enter all of our weekly contests, and follow along with us in the comments.

Official Participant Requirements:

Bloggers:

  • Post a Fat Fling 2010 Post on your blog before Friday May 7th, and link up on the ‘Kicking off the Fat Fling 2010‘ post here at Stuff to Love.
  • Post a Fat Fling 2010 Update post on your blog every Friday in May and link up on our Fat Fling Friday status post.
  • Comment at least 10 times on Fat Fling 2010 posts here at Stuff to Love throughout May.
  • Post our Fat Fling 2010 “I’m Flinging!” badge in a post or in the sidebar of your blog.

Dailyburn.com:

  • Post a Fat Fling 2010 post every Friday in May and link up on our Fat Fling 2010 status post.
  • Comment at least 10 times on Fat Fling 2010 posts here at Stuff to Love throughout May.
  • Join the Fat Fling 2010 Challenge at Dailyburn.com and track your progress.

Doing the above will get you entered into our prize drawings at the end of the challenge. Even if you don’t do these things, you are still welcome to enter all the giveaways we will be posting throughout the month. There are lots! Plus some really fun surprises. There will also be so great information posted that we hope will help you learn to make Wii Fit a habit!

You tell us: What’s your favorite Wii exercise game [beyond WiiFit]

This is where you tell us about stuff you like. Because we really want to know! Let us know your answer in the comments. Today’s question is…

What’s your favorite Wii exercise game besides Wii Fit? Are there any exercise games you’d like to try?

Ema says: I’m pretty addicted to Wii Fit. They added so much stuff in Wii Fit Plus, that there’s still stuff I haven’t tried. I do really like  Gold’s Gym Cardio Workout. I liked the rhythm boxing on Wii Fit, but it got really easy and repetitive really fast. The Gold’s Gym game is much more complex and challenging. I really work up a sweat with it. Also, I’ve heard the Jillian Michaels Fitness Ultimatum 2010 game is a really tough workout. I’d like something really challenging to do on weekends when I have the hour to devote to Wii time.

What about you?

Reveiw: Wii Fit Plus

When I didn’t have a Wii, I didn’t really understand Wii Fit and how a video game could help you work out. Then I got a Wii for my birthday last year…then I understood the theory, but I didn’t really think I needed one. I walked to and from work at least 3 days a week, I got light exercise…so why did I need a video game that would give me the same thing? Fast forward a few months, and suddenly I was sitting in my house, with a newborn, and it was -10 degrees outside…now I NEEDED a WiiFit. So off to Target I went, and bought one last March.

When you buy the Wii Fit Plus package, you get the game and the balance board. Many other Wii games have started adding balance board support, so its a nice Wii accessory to have in itself. The balance board is about the size of a bathroom rug, and is low to the floor. If you’re lucky it will slide right under your entertainment center to store (I’m not that lucky, so mine stands on its side next to the TV). Its nice that, though its a piece of exercise equipment, it doesn’t take up half the room.

The Wii Fit comes with Yoga, Aerobic, Strength and Balance activities.  The yoga and strength training are common exercises/moves that they have slightly modified to take advantage of the feedback provided by the balance board or the wiimote. I’ve never been a ‘workout class’ person, and I usually give up on using videos at home because I never get feedback. Amazingly, the balance board is really able to help you correct posture and positioning. I actually feel like I’m doing yoga poses right. I’ve also talked with yoga people who say that though slightly modified to accommodate the input devices, the poses are accurate.

The aerobic and balance exercises are the fun part of Wii Fit Plus. There are 3 different groups. The aerobic exercises are where you find the step aerobics, running, rhythm boxing. I really like the rhythm boxing. Once you get the steps down, you really work up a sweat. The step aerobics is really basic, but good to get your heart rate up. If you just feel like doing some stepping, you can set it up so you can do steps for a certain amount of time, and then watch TV while you’re doing it (the wiimote gives you audio prompts). The balance games are what everyone has seen the most of on ads and videos. They are fun little games where the better balanced you are, the better you do. Wii Fit Plus added some combo activities over the first version, that are both balance and aerobic for a little bit more of a challenge. They also added biking, which is much more fun than running. There are a wide range of things to do, making it easy to keep from getting in an exercise rut.

My biggest complaint is the time it takes to switch between exercises. Really, it takes 45 minutes to do 30 minutes of exercise. With the release of Wii Fit plus its gotten a little faster because you can set up a workout. Although, I’m a little disappointed in the workouts, because they don’t allow you to add in balance games, or Wii Fit plus activities. You can only chain together yoga and strength training. But even that does shave off a little time, now I can set up my 15 minute yoga warmup then pick my aerobic and balance activities I want to do after that. I can’t wait  they fix the game where I can set up a 45 minute routine that will just roll through. To get around this, I use a site called Wiifitroutine.com. There you can create a routine in advance to printout. It will keep you from having to think too much and get overwhelmed with choices during your workout.

I’ve been really impressed with the Wii Fit since I got it. Its more of a fitness tool than I initially gave it credit for. I do need to use it more than I do, but that’s my own failing. The Wii Fit is easy for anyone to use. It is PERFECT for non-athletic people who just want to start working towards a fitness goal. Its a great way to start working exercise back into your life. I felt improvements in my posture and energy level right away after starting to use it. If you are trying to get back into shape from a mostly-sedentary lifestyle, the Wii Fit is a great place to start.

Mika is getting a Wii Fit too, so watch for our Wii Fit challenge coming soon!
