Fat Fling 2010: DecalGirl Wii Skins Review & Giveaway (ends 5/26)

Fat Fling 2010

Though you can just take your Wii Fit out of the box, plop it on the floor and go, there are accessories out there that can make the experience much more fun. We’ve brought together some accessories that are out there for the Wii Fit and the Wii Balance Board…We’re going to try them out, and then let you know what we both think. You can also enter to win one yourself, and try them out too.

Have you entered our current giveaway? Make sure to enter the giveaway for a Plush Cushion for the Wii Balance Board. Entering is easy! Don’t forget to tell us how last week went on our week 2 check in post.

Today’s review is all about making your Wii a little prettier. Thanks to DecalGirl, Mika and I both were able to wrap our Wii consoles and remotes in awesome full color skins. Here’s what we think of them:

What Ema thought: I’ve been using DecalGirl skins on my iPods and cell phones for a couple years. I wasn’t sure about their bigger skins. I didn’t know how they would go on. I was really excited to be able to try out a Wii console skin.

We have our Wii set horizontal in our entertainment center. Instead of wanting some wild screaming graphics, I wanted something solid and subtle that would not make the Wii stand out like it did being solid white in a dark wood entertainment center surrounded by dark components. I chose the Dark Burlwood skin for my Wii itself. I didn’t want to have woody remotes, so I decided to match a print we have hanging in our livingroom. So our remotes and nunchucks are sporting the Starry Night skin on them.

Installation was really easy. As long as your Wii is clean, and you work carefully, this skins are a breeze to put on. The adhesive does not instantly bond, so you can reposition the sticker as you are putting it on. DecalGirl’s website also has very detailed installations instructions if you get stuck. The skins for bigger devices are split into small parts that are easy to put on.

My only complaint is that the majority of the Wii skins are not designed for a Wii that’s laying horizontal like mine is. The ‘bottom’ of the Wii (or right side of a horizontal sitting Wii) doesn’t get a skin piece, so that side of mine is still white. Unfortunately, this gives it a little bit of an unfinished feel. I still like it better skinned, than not…I just wish there was a ‘horizontal’ option for some of the skins. Or even the ability to just add that one extra piece to an order.

Really, I have a hard time choosing which skin I want whenever I decide to order from DecalGirl. They are all so beautiful, detailed and very high quality skins. If you want to individualize your Wii, start with them.

What Mika thought: I have to admit, I’m a pretty no frills girl, and when Ema showed me the WiiFit skins over at Decal Girl, initially..I said, “ok, pretty, but why?”  Well, that’s just it, it’s just COOL!  I personally wanted to go all girly with it, but the large amount of testosterone in my house said otherwise.  So I let my husband have final say in the design and he picked the Wolf Tree.  When we got it I was pretty amazed at the high quality of the graphic itself, and the intricacy for all of the little slots and slits that come with a media device like the Wii. As you can see in the picture above, the skin fits perfectly on the Wii itself, and the remote as well.  I left application up to my husband and he said it was really easy…the hardest part was smoothing out the little air bubbles.  He ended up using a straight edge to help smooth them out all the way.

Bottom line? I love it!  And now that I’ve overcome my fear of skins, next up is to skin my iPhone when I get it next week, I’m getting this one, the Peace Frog (seriously???  LOVE LOVE LOVE!).  If they had that one for the Wii, that would totally be on it’s way to my house right now!

CTA Digital Wii Balance Board Cushion Review & Giveaway (Ends 5/19)

Fat Fling 2010

Though you can just take your Wii Fit out of the box, plop it on the floor and go, there are accessories out there that can make the experience much more fun. We’ve brought together some accessories that are out there for the Wii Fit and the Wii Balance Board…We’re going to try them out, and then let you know what we both think. You can also enter to win one yourself, and try them out too.

Have you entered our current giveaway? We are giving away a workout Towel from Whimsical Walney. Entering is easy, just takes a comment! Don’t forget to tell us how last week went on our week 1 check in post.

Thanks to CTA Digital, Mika and I both were able to try a Plush Cushion for Wii Fit Balance Board. Here’s what we thought of them:

What Ema thought: When I first saw the Plush Cushion for Wii Fit Balance Board, I thought ”never in a million years” I couldn’t see what difference it would make. Plus, wouldn’t it be slippery? Wouldn’t it be awkward? What exactly would you use it for. Now I’ve tried one for a couple weeks. I still don’t consider it a necessity, but its actually a pretty cool little deal.

Its very basic. A plush covered pillow with thick elastic straps to wrap around the balance board. Its actually pretty easy to slide off and on the board. Which is nice if you only want to use it for specific exercises. One really nice feature…the cover comes off and is machine washable. Very nice for something you have the potential to get really sweaty! Its REALLY BRIGHT GREEN…which totally attracted my toddler like a moth to flame. He’s convinced its really his, and I’m only allowed to use it if he’s not in the room. heee

I’ve used the Wii Balance Board Plush Cushion a few times with my workouts. The first place I thought to use it was with the exercises you sit on the board for…specifically the Grounded V. It really does make that exercise a bit more comfortable. Your abs may be screaming, but at least your tailbone isn’t too! This cushion really makes sense for exercises that you sit on the board for. It makes the balance board a lot more comfortable and the edges less sharp. But there are less than a handful of sitting exercises…so how does it work when you’re moving around?

I wasn’t quite ready for using it fully in motion, so I started out just using the cushion during my daily warm-up routine. No aerobics, but some lunges, and yoga poses…so my feet were moving around the board. I was expecting there to be grip material on the back of the cushion to keep it from sliding around during movement. There wasn’t any, so I was thinking it was going to slip around on the top of the balance board when you moved, as the plush material feels slippery. Surprisingly, the cushion doesn’t move around much at all. On the Spine Stretch pose, my foot felt more stable even. There was a spot for my foot to settle into, and it didn’t feel like it was going to pop off the board. (I have this problem with the yoga/exercises that require one foot on the board, maybe its me???)

Once I got comfortable using it when I was just standing still, I decided to try it with a step aerobics routine. It really wasn’t too bad. But you really do have to be very very aware of the edges of the cushion. If you get sore feet using the Wii Fit, this cushion is a great alternative to wearing shoes on the balance board. Unfortunatly, shoes really can damage the scale wires in the board…so you don’t want to use them if you can avoid it. This cushion is something to look into if sore feet are a problem for you.

I’m going to use it when I play We Ski & Snowboard too. I often get sore spots on the bottom of my feet when I play for a long time. I’m hoping the cushion will alleviate some of those pressure spots. The Plush Cushion for Wii Fit Balance Board isn’t a necessity, but if you are looking for a solution for sore feet its a great place to start.

What Mika thought: When I got the Plush Cushion for Wii Fit Balance Board from CTA Digital, I sat and looked at it, in the box, for days.  As you might remember from last week, I’m not the most coordinated of people, so I was kinda scared of this from the get go.  I finally got my nerve up last week and got it out of the box.  This thing is PLUSH ya’ll!  The outer cover is so uber soft and the cover is super squishy.  It totally feels like what could be my favorite pillow!  I got it slid on the balance board, took a deep breath, and jumped in.

As I predicted, it made me even more uncoordinated (is that even possible?).  I was so worried about lifting my foot high enough to not trip over it, that I couldn’t get my timing right and the Wii Fit was laughing at me.  Now, I don’t do alot of yoga, because its HARD, and I’m building up to it, BUT the little bit I have done I can see where this could be really beneficial.  Quality-wise, so far so good. I’ve been using it for about 5 days or so of workouts, and there are definite “slumps” where my feet go, but it seems to be holding up fine.  I don’t see it holding up for years, but I think it will last for awhile if I only use it for yoga and not for general workouts.  Plus I’ll feel more stable, as the outer cover is a bit slippery-I’m constantly afraid I’ll slip and break my neck on a toddler lol.

Review & Giveaway: Whimsical Walney Words to Sweat By Towel (ends 5/16)

When you exercise, unfortunately, you sweat.  I’m NOT a big fan of sweating, and have spent much of my life avoiding it like the plague.  Frankly, it just feels gross!  Since I’m committed to finding my skinny self though, I’ve gotta sweat, gross or not.  But who likes that drippy wet feeling? Not me!

I was super excited to try out the towels from Whimsical Walney’s Words to Sweat By line.  These are hand towel sized, so perfect for throwing in your bag to take to the gym, or sticking in the back of your waistband to grab during your workout like I do.  They have a patch sewn on the front with really great sayings on them-I chose the “No Excuses” towel, because ya, I’m the queen of excuses and procrastination.  The other one I really liked is “Dancing my butt off..literally”.  Seriously witty stuff, it’s great!

The quality of the towel is not so great.  You can tell it’s a cheap towel, it’s kinda scratchy and the loops are pretty far apart.  It’s not super absorbent, but unless you’re sweating buckets that shouldn’t be an issue. These are a really cute and motivational reminder of what we’re trying to do here.  No excuses.

Wii Shadow Boxing Gloves Review & Giveaway (ENDED)

Fat Fling 2010

Though you can just take your Wii Fit out of the box, plop it on the floor and go, there are accessories out there that can make the experience much more fun. We’ve brought together some accessories that are out there for the Wii Fit and the Wii Balance Board…We’re going to try them out, and then let you know what we both think. You can also enter to win one yourself, and try them out too.

Before we get started, have you entered our Wii Balance Board skin giveaway? Awesome!

Thanks to Company X Accessories, Ema and I both were able to try some Wii Shadow Boxing Gloves. Here’s what we thought of them:

What Mika thought: I got to try out the Wii Shadow Boxing Gloves during my workout tonight.  A few days ago, we gave them a go as a family playing the regular Wii Sports Boxing, but tonight I tried them out on the Rhythm Boxing with the Wii Fit Plus. As someone who isn’t a huge boxing fan, I was pretty skeptical.

At first glance, they look pretty cool!  They got me all geared up and ready to punch things, really made me feel “professional” and motivated.  Hey ya’ll, I’ve never said I’m not a geek, and I’m a seriously uncoordinated geek at that!  The material is a bit scratchy which was a bit uncomfortable since I have some mild texture issues with what touches my hands.  Once I got them on though, it was fine.  I have SMALL hands, as in, my 10 year old son who is on the small side has hands bigger than mine.  The gloves were a bit big until I worked on adjusting them.  I didn’t realize that you could actually adjust the length of them (which was the biggest issue for me, you could barely see my pinky peeking out!), but the wrists did tighten down really nice and small so they were comfy.  Tonight I realized that those grey X’s you see in the picture above are actually where you can adjust the length, so when I adjusted them as small as they went, they fit pretty well!

On the inside of the palms are the little sleeves for the Wii-motes.  It’s rather awkward getting the remote and nunchuck into those sleeves correctly.  I tried it both before I put on the gloves, and after they were on.  Both ways presented their own challenges and I needed help to finish the job either way (please note, I’m uncoordinated!).  Once they were in though, it was really nice.  I obviously didn’t have to grip the remote and nunchuck, and I could more fully concentrate on NOT tripping over the balance board or my feet during my workout.  Eventually they did start to slip out of the sleeves a little bit, but I just pushed them back down and they were fine.

Overall, I really do like these and I’ll be using them every time I do any boxing games.  My husband tried them on, and they fit him fine, but he commented on the scratchy material as well.  The kids tried them on, and they didn’t care about the material, they just thought they looked awesome!  It was really nice for the kids to use these though because we didn’t have to worry about them throwing the remotes into the TV (they are very exuberant boxers, and that HAS happened before!).

I’m normally not much of an accessory and frills kinda girl, but these are ones I would totally spend $20 on (even if just for TV insurance alone!), they really are worth it!  Although I must say, I would spend the $20 on the pink pair!

Wii Shadow Boxing GlovesWhat Ema thought: I really like Wii Fit boxing…even more, I like Gold’s Gym Cardio Workout. Its more challenging, and much more of a workout. When the boxing gloves came, I thought they were neat, but not something that I would use regularly. I really didn’t expect to like them at all.

When I got them out of the box, the first thing that impressed me was the compact size, with some weight behind it. They knuckles have gel packs in them, giving these light gloves some heft…which comes in handy, I’ll explain later. I have small hands, not as small as Mika’s, but still…I wear kid size gloves normally…Mens small is usually too big. These were marked as a Medium, so I wasn’t expecting these to fit well at all. Surprisingly…they do fit, and they fit my hands nicely. The shadow boxing gloves seem to be made with women in mind. Instead of me having to ratchet all the straps down to make them work for me…the opposite is true. They are made on a smaller form factor, and my husband is the one that has to let the straps out a little for the gloves to fit his hands. This makes them a very comfortable fit for me. Having ‘adjustable sized’ gloves that fit me this properly is kind of a shock!

The palms of the gloves have pockets to fit the remotes in. Now, with Gold’s Gym Cardio, you use both remotes (instead of a remote and a nunchuck) so its a little bit of an awkward dance to get them both in the palm holders…but once in, they are comfortable and the remotes are secure. I really like this feature! With the Wii Fit Rhythm boxing, you don’t get going for very long…but with Gold’s Gym Cardio you are moving fast, sweaty and sometimes flailing madly in order to keep up. These gloves take out the “don’t throw the remote at your TV” factor. Which is really nice. I like that I can keep my hands relaxed, and I don’t have to clutch the remote.

The controls register pretty consistently on the games I’ve used the gloves with. Since the gloves are small, they don’t really hinder any communication with the Wii. I do think the straps press buttons occasionally, and then it won’t register anything when you punch. When that happens you have to wiggle them a little to get the remote back in the ‘sweet spot’.

The knuckle pads of the gloves (the yellow part) have ‘EverGEL’ in them. I didn’t really understand this at first, as there’s warnings all over the package that you’re not to use these gloves for hitting anything…so why is there padding?!? Well, when you get into a challenging and fast routine you discover why. The gel acts as a bit of a backstop. Its hard to explain, but it gives your knuckles a bit of something to smack into when punching…so it just makes the movement a lot more ‘real’. My punches felt more solid with the gloves.

The Wii Shadow Boxing gloves really impressed me. They were not an accessory I would have ever thought I needed, but now that I have them, I won’t box without them. They are comfortable, fit well and really aid a boxing workout. If you are a cardio boxing addict like I am, check out these gloves!

Here’s the first week’s Challenge for the Fat Fling 2010. Have fun with it! Ask questions, share any tips you have. Let us know how it goes on your Fat Fling Friday check-in post. If you haven’t entered our giveaway for a Wii Balance Board skin…go do that too!

The best way to make the Wii Fit to easy to use is to make a short routine that you can use as a warmup for a longer workout, or use it as a quick workout or those days when you only have a short amount of time to Wii Fit. The new Wii Fit Plus at least has a limited routine feature…but it could be way better. The fact that your can’t mix aerobic exercise and balance games into a preset workout is lame. But to make up for that, there’s a website called wiifitroutine.com. There you can pick from premade routines, or use their routine generator to come up with routines that include all the exercises on Wii Fit Plus. I use this on weekends when I try to get in an hour to an hour and a half on the Wii both days.

But even with having wiifitroutine.com, you still need a short pre-set routine…they save so much time. Its a good way to make it easy to get on your Wii Fit every day. I start with my pre-set routine no matter what workout I’m going to do. So even if I’m using Gold’s Gym Cardio that day, I still use my Wii Fit Plus routine to warm up with. Two days a week, I work in the morning and I don’t have a lot of time, so I just make sure I get my pre-set routine in and go.

This week, work on creating that short routine. It only needs to be 15-25 minutes. You want it to have a warmup part, some strength training in the middle and then a short cooldown. That’s a great way to warm up for a harder workout. Plus, on those days when you don’t have a lot of time, it fills in as a mini-workout.

The hard part is knowing what exercises are good where. That’s something I wish Wii Fit was a little better at. Good exercises to start with are slow stretchy ones that can give your body cues that you are starting to work out. I always start with Sun Salutation, Half-Moon and Spine Stretch. Think of exercises that make you feel good when you do them, and that don’t make you sweat.

In the middle you want to have 2-4 strength and harder yoga poses. Find stuff that you can do, but they aren’t easy to do. I like the Arm & Leg Lift, Grounded V, and Lunges for this one. You want to have a little bit of a challenge, and get your blood moving.

Last get in some cool down exercises. Just like the warmup exercises, you want things that are stretchy, and give your muscles a chance to cool down. This is a great place for Spinal Twist, Tricep curls and Deep Breathing.

Here’s my ‘Daily’ routine, its 22 minutes, and really focuses on legs, butt and abs:

  • Sun Salutation
  • Half-Moon
  • Spine Extension
  • Arm & Leg Lift
  • Warrior
  • Grounded V
  • Standing Knee
  • Lunge
  • Tricep Extension
  • Spinal Twist
  • Deep Breathing

Are you ready to build a routine this week? Do you already have a routine? What are some of your favorite exercises?
