Sweet and Deadly by Charlaine Harris

Sweet and Deadly Charlaine HarrisA few months ago, I took the plunge and started reading the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris.  I have this particular quirk that once I read something and like it by an author I must then hunt down everything else they’ve written and read it.  So with that quirk, I’ve been abusing my local library to find all of her books to read. If you are friends with me on Goodreads, you’ll see that I’ve made quite a dent!

The most recent finish of her work is Sweet and Deadly.  This is one of her early novels, which gave me a bit of pause at first.  But it really shouldn’t have.   “Sweet and Deadly” is the story of a young woman who returns to her hometown in the south after the tragic death of her parents.  She works as a reporter at the small local paper, and starts discovering dead bodies of people she has been connected to.  The story brings in a bit of her personal history while of course winding in the beginnings of a romance as well.  Blackmail and unexpected secrets found out are at the basis of this story.

Normally murder mystery books are pretty easy to figure out by about the middle of the book for me.  This one? I never saw it coming.  Which is the way it should be!  I won’t go any further, as I don’t want to spoil the ending!

It’s a short, quick read and quite easy to follow along with even with interruptions.  I give Sweet and Deadly by Charlaine Harris 3.5 stars!

Stuff To Love..on its way back!

Well hey, so we kinda dropped off the face of the planet there huh?  Sometimes, life jumps up and smacks ya in the face and sometimes it just knocks you down and takes you for a drag down the backroads tied to the back of a truck.  That’s kinda what happened here.

For now, I (Mika) will be taking over the reins here at STL while Ema continues to untie herself from the back of the truck.  She’s still around, just taking care of the back end stuff that I know nothing about.  As for me, we just bought our first house, along with almost 2 acres of land on which we’ll be starting our own mini homestead.  So I’m pretty sure you’ll hear about that as we go!

I know one of the issues that lead to the hibernation of this blog was having advertisers who weren’t following through with their end of the bargain so we had some folks who didn’t receive their prizes.  That upset Ema and I very much, and still isn’t something I think we have a good solution to make sure doesn’t happen but we’re working on it!  Regardless, we won’t worry about that so much right now!  You’ll see a bit of dust going on around here as we spiff things up a bit, but I’ll be posting new stuff starting soon!

Review & Giveaway: Whimsical Walney Words to Sweat By Towel (ends 5/16)

When you exercise, unfortunately, you sweat.  I’m NOT a big fan of sweating, and have spent much of my life avoiding it like the plague.  Frankly, it just feels gross!  Since I’m committed to finding my skinny self though, I’ve gotta sweat, gross or not.  But who likes that drippy wet feeling? Not me!

I was super excited to try out the towels from Whimsical Walney’s Words to Sweat By line.  These are hand towel sized, so perfect for throwing in your bag to take to the gym, or sticking in the back of your waistband to grab during your workout like I do.  They have a patch sewn on the front with really great sayings on them-I chose the “No Excuses” towel, because ya, I’m the queen of excuses and procrastination.  The other one I really liked is “Dancing my butt off..literally”.  Seriously witty stuff, it’s great!

The quality of the towel is not so great.  You can tell it’s a cheap towel, it’s kinda scratchy and the loops are pretty far apart.  It’s not super absorbent, but unless you’re sweating buckets that shouldn’t be an issue. These are a really cute and motivational reminder of what we’re trying to do here.  No excuses.

Wii Shadow Boxing Gloves Review & Giveaway (ENDED)

Fat Fling 2010

Though you can just take your Wii Fit out of the box, plop it on the floor and go, there are accessories out there that can make the experience much more fun. We’ve brought together some accessories that are out there for the Wii Fit and the Wii Balance Board…We’re going to try them out, and then let you know what we both think. You can also enter to win one yourself, and try them out too.

Before we get started, have you entered our Wii Balance Board skin giveaway? Awesome!

Thanks to Company X Accessories, Ema and I both were able to try some Wii Shadow Boxing Gloves. Here’s what we thought of them:

What Mika thought: I got to try out the Wii Shadow Boxing Gloves during my workout tonight.  A few days ago, we gave them a go as a family playing the regular Wii Sports Boxing, but tonight I tried them out on the Rhythm Boxing with the Wii Fit Plus. As someone who isn’t a huge boxing fan, I was pretty skeptical.

At first glance, they look pretty cool!  They got me all geared up and ready to punch things, really made me feel “professional” and motivated.  Hey ya’ll, I’ve never said I’m not a geek, and I’m a seriously uncoordinated geek at that!  The material is a bit scratchy which was a bit uncomfortable since I have some mild texture issues with what touches my hands.  Once I got them on though, it was fine.  I have SMALL hands, as in, my 10 year old son who is on the small side has hands bigger than mine.  The gloves were a bit big until I worked on adjusting them.  I didn’t realize that you could actually adjust the length of them (which was the biggest issue for me, you could barely see my pinky peeking out!), but the wrists did tighten down really nice and small so they were comfy.  Tonight I realized that those grey X’s you see in the picture above are actually where you can adjust the length, so when I adjusted them as small as they went, they fit pretty well!

On the inside of the palms are the little sleeves for the Wii-motes.  It’s rather awkward getting the remote and nunchuck into those sleeves correctly.  I tried it both before I put on the gloves, and after they were on.  Both ways presented their own challenges and I needed help to finish the job either way (please note, I’m uncoordinated!).  Once they were in though, it was really nice.  I obviously didn’t have to grip the remote and nunchuck, and I could more fully concentrate on NOT tripping over the balance board or my feet during my workout.  Eventually they did start to slip out of the sleeves a little bit, but I just pushed them back down and they were fine.

Overall, I really do like these and I’ll be using them every time I do any boxing games.  My husband tried them on, and they fit him fine, but he commented on the scratchy material as well.  The kids tried them on, and they didn’t care about the material, they just thought they looked awesome!  It was really nice for the kids to use these though because we didn’t have to worry about them throwing the remotes into the TV (they are very exuberant boxers, and that HAS happened before!).

I’m normally not much of an accessory and frills kinda girl, but these are ones I would totally spend $20 on (even if just for TV insurance alone!), they really are worth it!  Although I must say, I would spend the $20 on the pink pair!

Wii Shadow Boxing GlovesWhat Ema thought: I really like Wii Fit boxing…even more, I like Gold’s Gym Cardio Workout. Its more challenging, and much more of a workout. When the boxing gloves came, I thought they were neat, but not something that I would use regularly. I really didn’t expect to like them at all.

When I got them out of the box, the first thing that impressed me was the compact size, with some weight behind it. They knuckles have gel packs in them, giving these light gloves some heft…which comes in handy, I’ll explain later. I have small hands, not as small as Mika’s, but still…I wear kid size gloves normally…Mens small is usually too big. These were marked as a Medium, so I wasn’t expecting these to fit well at all. Surprisingly…they do fit, and they fit my hands nicely. The shadow boxing gloves seem to be made with women in mind. Instead of me having to ratchet all the straps down to make them work for me…the opposite is true. They are made on a smaller form factor, and my husband is the one that has to let the straps out a little for the gloves to fit his hands. This makes them a very comfortable fit for me. Having ‘adjustable sized’ gloves that fit me this properly is kind of a shock!

The palms of the gloves have pockets to fit the remotes in. Now, with Gold’s Gym Cardio, you use both remotes (instead of a remote and a nunchuck) so its a little bit of an awkward dance to get them both in the palm holders…but once in, they are comfortable and the remotes are secure. I really like this feature! With the Wii Fit Rhythm boxing, you don’t get going for very long…but with Gold’s Gym Cardio you are moving fast, sweaty and sometimes flailing madly in order to keep up. These gloves take out the “don’t throw the remote at your TV” factor. Which is really nice. I like that I can keep my hands relaxed, and I don’t have to clutch the remote.

The controls register pretty consistently on the games I’ve used the gloves with. Since the gloves are small, they don’t really hinder any communication with the Wii. I do think the straps press buttons occasionally, and then it won’t register anything when you punch. When that happens you have to wiggle them a little to get the remote back in the ‘sweet spot’.

The knuckle pads of the gloves (the yellow part) have ‘EverGEL’ in them. I didn’t really understand this at first, as there’s warnings all over the package that you’re not to use these gloves for hitting anything…so why is there padding?!? Well, when you get into a challenging and fast routine you discover why. The gel acts as a bit of a backstop. Its hard to explain, but it gives your knuckles a bit of something to smack into when punching…so it just makes the movement a lot more ‘real’. My punches felt more solid with the gloves.

The Wii Shadow Boxing gloves really impressed me. They were not an accessory I would have ever thought I needed, but now that I have them, I won’t box without them. They are comfortable, fit well and really aid a boxing workout. If you are a cardio boxing addict like I am, check out these gloves!

Review: Rockin’ Green Soap-Lavendar Vanilla Scent

Rockin Green Detergent -Lavender Vanilla Scent is what graced my last load of laundry (no, not last load EVER unfortunately!).  Even though Rockin’ Green was developed for, and primarily marketed to, the cloth diapering segment, I really wanted to try it for my eldest sons clothing and bedding.  He still occasionally wets the bed at night, and even though I started using plain vinegar as fabric softener quite some time ago, after awhile his items had developed a build up of the urine smell and “dinginess”.

I received a sample size package of this detergent to review, and the scent is..just awesome.  Slightly floral, but the vanilla undertones give it a wonderful richness, but don’t worry, the scent doesn’t stay on your clothing.  When used correctly, Rockin’ Green washes completely away, leaving only the scent of clean.  The first load I did, I did as a soak.  I filled my machine with hot water and the dingy smelly items, along with about half the pack of Rockin’ Green (about 3 T. as directed, although I did go by sight, I bake often enough that I’ve pretty well got it down).  I left it to sit overnight, on accident..it was only supposed to sit an hour according to their directions.

The next day, I drained the washer, then rewashed the load in the remaining detergent.  Once it came out of the dryer, I did the dreaded “sniff test”.  All I smelled was clean cotton, no trace of the urine odor, or of the Rockin’ Green itself.  The dinginess was still there on some items, but was much improved on most of them.

I was hoping to try it on a few other loads to test out a few different things, but the sample size wasn’t large enough for that, which is fine..I’m very happy with how the one load turned out.  Take note, if you do order the sample size (which I think you should do, give it a shot!), that instructions for doing the initial soak on your diapers are not included in that packaging.  I looked them up on their Facebook page because I had remembered seeing them there.  Their Facebook page is awesome, not only do you get the usual fans saying how much they love a product, and general questions, you also get tips from users and Kim (the owner) as well.  Like just now, I saw a tip that the Hard Rock will take rust off knives! Who knew?

The next time I run out of our regular detergent, I’ll be ordering the larger size of Rockin’ Green to give a true laundry trial in this house of 7, I’m very optimistic about the results!

Win It Wednesday: The Handmade Marketplace by Kari Chapin

The Handmade Marketplace: How to Sell Your Crafts Locally, Globally, and On-Line is a book I’ve had my eye on for a little while.  As the owner of my own little business, it looked like it would be a great book to read..and boy was it! Targeted specifically to people like me, who not only love to create, but also want to (or already do) market their items to sell, this book hit a home run.

Written by Kari Chapin, not only does she rely on her years of experience in the craft world, but she also draws from what she refers to as her “Creative Collective”.  The Creative Collective is a group of other artists that includes some of the blogs I’ve been reading for years (Amy Karol of Angry Chicken, Caroline Devoy of JCaroline Creative, and more!), and quite a few that are new to me, but I can’t wait to explore!

I love how this book is so perfectly in tune with the needs and challenges of not only being a small business owner, but a HANDMADE small business owner.  It’s a very unique niche to be in, and this book covers it all.  From the basics of getting to know yourself and business, to marketing (one of my personal HUGE failures),  it even talks about how your blog and Twitter can help!  Speaking of, next week I’ll be starting an open discussion series on this book on my own blog, I want to delve deeper into this and would love to have all you other crafty types come over and participate!

To let you know how much I think this book is worth..I’m VERY against writing in books, it seems like sacrilege to me.  In this book though, it BEGGED for me to mark it up and make notes.  So I did, everywhere!  Almost every page has notes on it, and there are post its sticking out all over the place.

If you have a handmade business, or are thinking of starting one, buy this book…it’s worth every penny!

Review: Lofthouse Frosted Cookies

I think those who don’t love cookies are pretty few and far between, and Lofthouse cookies are very popular.  I tend to do most of the baking at home myself, so this past weekend was the first time we’d tried these.  My parents got them for Ree for her Easter basket since she’s not really old enough for candy (and I don’t want her having much yet anyway!).

The cookie portion itself is pillowy soft, and I was really excited because I LOVE soft cookies and these just felt amazing!  Once I got a piece in my mouth though, my opinion went south pretty quick.  The cookie kind of turned to paste inside my mouth (this was JUST the cookie, no frosting), and all you could really taste was flour.  Very blah.  Taking a bite including frosting, and it was just complete sugar shock.  You expect them to be sweet, but these were just..completely over the top.

They are very pretty, the bright colors and sprinkles are definitely an eye draw-the flavor just isn’t there.  At $3.99 for a dozen, they are definitely on the pricier end of baked goods and really, for less than half that, you can make a batch at home that actually taste GOOD (or pay a friend who bakes to make you some!).

Review: Target Up & Up Diapers

As a mama of 5, I’ve gone through my share of diapers.  I realized recently that I’ve been changing diapers every single day for over 10 years now-kind of a scary thought huh?  I’m pretty sure we’ve tried every brand available locally, from the big names like Huggies & Pampers, to the store brands-Kroger, Walgreens, Walmart, and most recently, Target.

Currently I have 2 in diapers (hoping that will change SOON!), and while we do try and use cloth quite often…most days I’m afraid to say we rely on disposables for the most part.  A few months ago, we happened to be at Target and their brand, Up & Up, was on sale, so we grabbed some to try.  Let me just say wow!  My son, age 2 1/2, is what we refer to as a “super pee-er”, he tends to stay dry for quite awhile then let’s loose the floodgates all at once.  With every other diaper we’ve tried, including cloth, that results in lots of clothing and bed changes through the day.  With the Target brand, we don’t have that happening nearly as often!

At the regular price of around $13.69 for a jumbo pack, the price averages out to about $0.13-$0.17 a diaper (depending on size, you get fewer diapers in the larger sizes).  That’s the best regular price I’ve been able to find in diapers (at least around me, and that doesn’t include any sales/coupons you use).

The main con to me is the fact that all sizes of diapers have the exact same design (and I’m not a huge fan of the dyes used for designs on diapers regardless), and they do not have the sizes marked on the outside of the diaper.  With one child in size 3, and one in size 4, you can imagine diaper changing is even more of an adventure!  The tabs could use a little work, my favorite diaper tabs are Pampers, so super stretchy and “grabby”…Target could get some design tips from them for their tabs.

Your turn!  What are your favorite diapers and why?  And pass good potty training thoughts this way as we’ll embarking on that path with my youngest son soon!

Review: Caribou Coffee K-Cups

As I’ve talked about before, I’m a HUGE fan of  my Keurig.  I’ve had it over a year now, and in that time, I’ve used quite a few different flavors of their K-Cups and today I’m going to tell you about my favorite, the Caribou Blend.

I love my coffee, but I’m not a big fan of super strong blends.  I admit, I’m kind of a wuss.  The Caribou is considered a medium blend, and therefore has a nice smooth taste.  I don’t claim to be any sort of an expert on coffee, so I  may not have the correct terminology, but I know what I like!  There is no bitterness, and coupled with some half and half and sugar, this builds my perfect cup of coffee!

From their site, the Caribou Blend is made from Indonesian, Central and South American beans.  “This signature blend balances a big-bodied, syrupy taste with a clean, snappy finish. The secret is a rich, hearty Indonesian bean, perfectly proportioned with Central and South American varieties for lively fruit tones.”

Caribou Coffee is committed to not only providing an awesome cup of coffee, but also to being responsible in their coffee growing.  I love that I can help support a company who operates in this manner, and get something I really enjoy at the same time.

At a very reasonable price of around $0.43 a cup, Caribou Coffee K-Cups are available at Target, as well as on various sites online, including Amazon.com.
