[CLOSED] Win it Wednesday: Aces High by Bill Yenne

Win it Wednesday on Stuff to Love

Welcome to Win it Wednesday!

Aces High: The Heroic Saga of the Two Top-Scoring American Aces of World War II by Bill Yenne is just that, a very interesting story of two World War II fighter pilots. I don’t normally read Military History, but this book was different. Just like Richard Bong, I grew up in northern Wisconsin…right near Superior. We often drove over the Richard I Bong Memorial Bridge, and went to airshows at the Richard I Bong Airport. I always knew Dick Bong was a famous fighter pilot. Now I know exactly why he was considered an American hero.

The author does a good job at chronicling the two men’s lives. Yenne tells the story straight: McGuire and Bong were regular guys who found themselves in the place and time where their eerily accurate talent for guiding a flying gun through blackened skies could make them heroes. As the greatest American fighter pilots of all time, these two sometimes-rivals/sometimes-friends lived brief lives that today remain the stuff of legend.

This is an engaging book, though a little slow at the beginning.  Author Bill Yenne does a great job of explaining both Bong’s and McGuire’s flight careers. There is a chapter devoted to the development of the P-38 Lightning plane, which both men flew with such deadly efficiency. Each major encounter for both pilots is covered, along with a few special moments for each pilot.

If you have ever wanted to know about World War II fighter pilots, this is a great place to start. Would also make a great gift for any airplane enthusiast. The descriptions of the air battles are amazing. Head over to Amazon.com and pick up a copy of Aces High, and find out why Dick Bong and Tommy McGuire are called “Aces of Aces”.
