10 iPod Touch/iPhone toddler games that will make that unexpected wait fly by

Toddler Tapping ZooI love finding iPod apps. I always have too many. Finding kids games is fun. There are a lot out there for free, or for only $1. So worth it if you can keep a restless toddler busy on an unexpected wait.

Here are 10 games that our family likes. They keep both my 14mo old and my 8 year old entertained (and often working together!) when we are at restaurants, or waiting at the doctor’s office. If you have little ones and an iPod Touch or an iPhone, give these a try (all links are iTunes links):

Toddler Tapping Zoo: Animal Sights and Sounds – Very nice animal pictures and sounds. Can just finger flip through them or press buttons to advance. Tapping produces animal sounds. Pictures are very high quality, and the sounds are accurate (you’d be surprised how many aren’t!). Can keep any age entertained…babies love to look at the pictures, older kids love the sounds.

Fluid – Not considered a kids game, but still a great fascinator. Fluid is just a rock background with simulated water over it. My baby boy LOVES this. All he has to do is poke the screen and it makes waves. You can also change the background to your own picture. Its a simple app with lots of entertainment potential.

iTodder Tamer – Very simple cause and effect toddler game. Poke the screen, something happens. Pick from 8 different categories, then when your child touches the screen, graphics appear. Swipe the screen and get a new picture and new graphics when the screen is touched. No rules, no levels, just touching and making things happen. Great toddler game. Simple entertainment.

Preschool Adventure – Another simple toddler learning game. Pick from Colors, Numbers, Shapes, Body, matching and sounds. All games are basic and just require tapping in the right place for action. Older toddlers will really like the simple problem solving of this game.

The Bumblebee TouchbookBumblebee Touchbook – A very cute animated storybook. You are given a choice between reading the book or watching the movie at the beginning. Reading the book lets your child interact with the story and tap to move it forward. The movie version reads the whole book without having to tap at all. Very cute counting story. Little ones can watch the book, older toddlers will enjoy helping the story along.

Wood Puzzle – So cute toddler wood puzzles simulator. Can set it up so the pieces rotate for older kids with dexterity to have to position them, or turn the rotate off for little ones to just be able to set the pieces in place. Kids just pick a puzzle, shake it up to scramble the pieces and then drag them into place to put them together. Has really cute wood puzzles, very pretty graphics.

Moo Box – Animal pictures and sounds. Kids can pick the animal they want to see and hear from 3 pages of photos. Larger variety of animals than Tapping Zoo, though some of the images are lower quality. Some of the sounds are a little off, but it does have things like dinosaur and marmot…which is kinda fun. If you have animal loving kids, this is a great collection of a lot of different sounds.

Doodle Buddy – Very simple drawing program. Let your little artist doodle away the wait. The controls are really easy to use, but they are also out of the way, so little ones can just poke a finger around without changing everything accidentally. Just shake it to start over. Lots of different backgrounds to draw on, and stamps to use.

The Adventures of Lily and Stella – We’re Home! – Very cute iPhone storybook. You can either read it yourself, or listen to the author read it. I love being able to carry around a couple different kids books on my iPod. This is a cute story about a dog and a baby. Quick read for a quick wait.

Bubble Wrap – Who can resist bubble wrap! This way you never run out. Pop bubble wrap as much as you want. And the nice thing for parents, is you can turn the volume down! See how many you can pop before the timer runs out. Just poke to pop. Great for any age.

These are great apps to have on your iPod Touch or iPhone if you have a toddler to keep entertained on the go. A lot of them require just enough help, that you can often get older siblings involved to help…thus keeping more than one kid entertained with one unit. Bonus! What are your favorite kid apps for the iPod Touch/iPhone?
