I have been off-and-on again cloth diapering my son since he was born. I really like the idea of cloth diapers, but finding the right absorbency is a challenge. The biggest problem I have with cloth diapers right now is that when I really NEED them to work, they ultimately let me down. But I do keep trying. We use them most at home, where clothing changes are close at hand.
Naptimes are hard on cloth diapers. That was one time I was nearly always using a disposable. I tried stuffing with many different combinations, and everything I tried leaked during naps. HOW FRUSTRATING! I hated having to change crib bedding nearly every day. In looking for a solution, I had heard how absorbent hemp was, but I hadn’t tried it. I found a Thirsties Hemp Inserts 2 Pack at Amazon.com and ordered them up. The price was worth the chance.
They don’t look like much when you get them. They are disconcertingly thin. I thought they would be textured, but they are an unbleached, smooth knit. It looks like its two layers of hemp terry cloth serged together with the smooth sides out. It makes them really easy to stuff in a diaper, as they slide over any material without bunching up. I washed them a few times (I don’t wash them alone, I just keep pulling them out and sticking them in new loads during laundry day), and then decided to jump right in and use them for naptime.
WOW! These things really hold water. First time I stuck one in a pocket diaper, it absorbed all through Bodi’s 3 hour nap with no leaks at all. The PUL wasn’t even getting soggy. I used both a microfiber insert and the hemp insert. Using both, makes them work together to suck up moisture. The thing I really like, is as absorbent as they were when I first started using them, they have only gotten more absorbent with more washings. Yesterday, I put Bodi down for a nap at 11am, hubby got him up and didn’t change him, distractions happened, and suddenly it was nearly 6pm and he’d not been changed (I know, its not great, but sometimes it happens)…NO LEAKS!!! The diaper was full, but the seams weren’t weeping, the PUL wasn’t wicking. I was completely amazed. Once thoroughly washed in, I think that 2 of these could make it overnight (which is 12 hours for my sleepy boy). I’m going to have to give that a try this weekend.
If you are looking for a ton of extra absorbency for your cloth diapers in a thin, easy to use insert, check out Thirsties Hemp Inserts. They work great for naptime, car travel, or anytime when you need a little extra absorbency over a longer period of time.
