Review: Keurig B40 Elite Single-Cup Home Brewing System

I’ve always been a fan of coffee, but I’ve always had issues making my own pot.  Either I don’t get the measurements quite right so it’s too weak or too strong, or I only manage to get a cup or two drank before the pot goes cold.  I’ve also always been a fan of Starbucks, which can get mighty expensive fast.  Enter the Keurig!

Early  last year we invested in the basic Keurig B40 Elite Gourmet Single-Cup Home-Brewing System. I was drawn to this system because not only does it brew a single cup of coffee at a time, which ensures I always have a hot cup when I want it, but you can also buy tea and hot chocolate Kcups to use. That’s great for the rest of my family since they don’t drink coffee but like hot drinks every now and then.  The wait time in between cups is about 30 seconds or so for the water to heat up, so you can quickly brew everyone a cup of their favorite drink.

Kcups come in a huge variety of flavors, my favorite is the Caribou Blend . A nice medium roast with a great smooth flavor.  I tried some of the Timothy’s brand, and the medium roasts are ok but not quite as flavorful as the Caribou.  The Donut Shop was pretty bitter, although I may have gotten a batch that was over roasted.

Now, back to the unit itself.  Over the course of the year, I’ve had to descale the unit once.  It was relatively easy once I found instructions online as to how to do it (at the time all of our belongings were in storage, including my instruction manual-thank God for Google!).  Slightly inconvient as it is pretty time consuming, but that’s to be expected.  I wish the water reservoir was bigger, when full it holds enough water for about 4 cups (large cups, but it fills my favorite cup perfectly!) and on days that I’m drinking alot of coffee it seems like I refill it too much, which is probably more of a problem with how much coffee I’m drinking!  The more advanced units do have a larger reservoir as well.

Overall, I LOVE my Keurig!  It’s so convienent and has paid for itself many times over in saved trips to Starbucks!
